What is a static DHCP lease?
Static DHCP leases allow you to reserve a local IPv4 address for a certain device based on that device's MAC address. This means that when the device requests an IP address using DHCP, your router will only hand out the address you've statically reserved for it.
This may be preferable over setting a static IP on the device, due to its simplicity.
Keep in mind that if your router gets factory reset or replaced, you will lose your static leases. We suggest you make a backup of your router's configuration and store it somewhere safe, just in case!
How do I set up a static DHCP lease?
Firstly, log into your router following this guide.
Once logged in, you need to find the MAC address of the device you want to give a static lease to. One way you can do that is by clicking "Devices".
Then on this page, search for the name of the device you want to set a static lease on and note down the MAC Address.
If you can't find your device in this list (sometimes the name of the device doesn't show up, depending on how it's configured), you can also check in your device's network settings and find the MAC address there.
Once you have the MAC address noted down, click "Local Network".
Scroll down to Static Leases and press "Add new static lease".
Enter the following details:
Enter the hostname of the device
Select the MAC address of the device from the list. You can also select "Custom" and enter the full MAC address manually
Select the IP you want to give that device, or select "Custom" and enter whichever IP you want to give to it (as long as it's in the same network as your LAN)
Press the green tick once you're happy with the settings
Your static lease is now set. This may take a few hours to show up. You may need to reboot or reconnect your device for the change to apply.
If the static lease doesn't apply, you may have entered the MAC address incorrectly. Please double-check this and try again.
