The short answer is no.

Unlike analogue technology which was used for the old copper phone lines, your new phone needs power to operate.

BetterPhone is a VOIP service (Voice Over Internet Protocol) that allows you to make and receive calls over the internet. This means that your internet will also need to be powered up in order to be connected to BetterPhone. Likewise, your handset will need to be connected to power in order for it to work.

There is a way around this though, you can install a battery backup (also known as a mini UPS) that will keep your internet and handset powered on during an outage or you could use a small portable battery pack and plug your internet and phone into this when there’s no power (if you go this route be sure to keep your battery pack on charge at all times so that it is fully charged when you have a power outage). Your fibre box (ONT), router and telephone handset will all need to be connected to whichever power backup option you choose, to stay online and to ensure you can make phone calls.

If you're not able to install a backup power solution and require access to a phone during a power outage, particularly for emergencies, we suggest that you have an alternative phone service that does work in an outage, such as a mobile phone.
